Our NetBird review

NetBird builds a WireGuard mesh with identity-aware policies, much like Tailscale, but with a difference that matters to some buyers: the entire system including the management server is open source and designed to be self-hosted, not just the client.

Running it yourself means no third party holds your coordination keys or sees your network topology. For companies with data residency requirements, or ones that simply do not want another SaaS dependency in the critical path, that is the deciding feature.

The managed cloud is EU-hosted and priced around $8 per user per month for teams, with a business tier adding posture checks, SSO group mapping and audit events. Peer connections are direct where possible, with relay fallback when NAT traversal fails.

Compared with Tailscale it is younger, the ecosystem of integrations and guides is thinner, and relay coverage is smaller so fallback paths can be slower. The core experience, though, is close, and it has matured quickly.

Germany is a 14 Eyes country, which matters less here than usual because the whole point is that you can host the control plane yourself.

Recommended for teams that want a mesh VPN without a permanent dependency on a US-operated control plane.

Frequently asked questions

NetBird or Tailscale?

Tailscale is more mature with a bigger ecosystem. NetBird lets you self-host the whole system including the control plane, and offers an EU-hosted cloud, which suits data residency requirements.

Is self-hosting hard?

It is a real deployment: management server, signal server, relays and an identity provider. Docker Compose files make it approachable, but it is not zero maintenance.

Does NetBird do device posture checks?

Yes, on the Business tier, alongside SSO group mapping and audit events.

Bottom line

NetBird is Tailscale's open-source challenger, with the whole stack including the control plane available to self-host and an EU cloud for those who want it managed.
