Our Planet VPN review

An uncapped free tier is unusual, and Planet VPN offers one across a small set of locations. For casual browsing on public Wi-Fi it functions, and the paid tier is inexpensive with 10 devices.

The concern is opacity. Free VPN infrastructure costs real money, and the honest business models are cross-subsidy from paid users, advertising, or funding from a foundation. Planet VPN says it is funded by premium subscriptions, but the company publishes little about its ownership or operations, and no audit exists.

Technically it is basic: WireGuard and OpenVPN, a kill switch, no split tunneling, no obfuscation, no multi-hop. Speeds on the free tier drop noticeably at peak hours, which is the usual sign of oversubscription.

Czech jurisdiction is favorable, cryptocurrency is accepted, and Netflix works occasionally from premium servers.

Acceptable as a casual free option. If you want a free VPN you can reason about, Proton VPN, hide.me and Windscribe all publish far more about themselves.

Frequently asked questions

Is Planet VPN safe?

There is no evidence of misconduct, but there is also little public information and no audit. In free VPNs, that absence of information is itself a reason for caution.

Is the free tier really unlimited?

Data is uncapped but locations are limited and speeds fall at busy times.

What is the better free alternative?

Proton VPN, which also has no data cap, publishes audits, and is funded by paying subscribers rather than anything unexplained.

Bottom line

Planet VPN offers uncapped free data and a cheap paid tier, but there is very little independent information about who runs it or how, which matters more in this category than any feature.
