Best cheap VPN with a usable free tier

PrivadoVPN Review

7.4/ 10 - our editorial score

PrivadoVPN pairs a genuinely useful free tier with one of the lowest paid prices anywhere, but it has no audit and a thin feature set, so it is a budget pick rather than a privacy pick.

Our PrivadoVPN review

PrivadoVPN is a Swiss startup that competes on price and on the quality of its free plan. Ten gigabytes a month across thirteen locations, with streaming access on some of them, is well ahead of most freemium tiers and enough for genuine occasional use.

The paid plan is priced aggressively, sometimes near a dollar a month on a two-year prepay, which is the cheapest sustained rate among providers we would consider recommending at all. Streaming works on Netflix, BBC iPlayer and Disney+ in our checks, and the apps cover Fire TV and Android TV as well as the usual platforms.

The catch is depth. No independent audit has been published, there is no obfuscation, no multi-hop, no port forwarding and no cryptocurrency payment. The company is young and has no meaningful public record of resisting legal demands, which is the kind of history that builds trust in this category.

Switzerland is a genuinely good jurisdiction, and PrivadoVPN says it keeps no activity logs, but at present that is a claim rather than a verified fact.

Speeds are fine rather than fast, and the network at around 900 servers is mid-sized. Support is available around the clock over chat.

Recommended as a budget purchase or as a free-tier fallback. If privacy verification matters to you, spend the extra couple of dollars on Proton VPN or hide.me instead.

Frequently asked questions

How good is the PrivadoVPN free plan?

It is one of the better freemium tiers: 10 GB a month, 13 locations and streaming access on some servers. Proton VPN remains the best free option overall because it has no data cap.

Has PrivadoVPN been audited?

No independent audit has been published, which is its main gap against similarly priced rivals like hide.me.

Is PrivadoVPN good for streaming?

Yes for the major platforms in our checks, including on some free-tier servers, which is unusual.

Bottom line

PrivadoVPN pairs a genuinely useful free tier with one of the lowest paid prices anywhere, but it has no audit and a thin feature set, so it is a budget pick rather than a privacy pick.
